To meet Mills increasing demand to supply to the trade they took ownership of an adjoining unit. Looking to maximise capacity and with an eye on further growth, they were looking for a mezzanine floor with longspan racking. STS Storage Systems were consulted after Mills received a recommendation, the challenge was to offer a service which matched all of Mill’s requirements, expectations and budgets.
STS Storage Systems liaised with the customer from the start, to come up with a design which maximised the ground floor space for their Longspan Racking requirements whilst designing a cost-effective mezzanine solution. The clear height under of the mezzanine was at 2600mm to allow the top beam of the Longspan to be fully utilised.
STS Storage Systems were able to successfully design a 462m2 mezzanine floor which integrated longspan racking on the ground floor. The key to the ground floor racking layout was the ability to allow pump truck access for manual unloading of pallets into the pick bays. Mezzanine columns were designed around a grid which allowed these to be hidden within bays, meaning no unsightly columns or obstacles in the aisles whilst keeping a cost-effective grid.
Due to the building control regulations relating to the floor size STS Storage Systems also needed to fire rate the mezzanine. Due to the products on the pick bays being close to the underside of the mezzanine ceiling, the customer decided to avoid any potential damage to his lighting installation by installing Cat 2 recessed lighting. The use of Cat 2 lighting meant we used a special grid to install the lighting central to the picking aisles. Throughout the installation, we worked in partnership with the customers and his preferred electrician.
STS Storage Systems took control of the building regulations application, providing all the documents to the building inspector. The project was completed on time and within budget for Mills Limited.
