Pallet Racking FAQs

Pallet racking is a pallet storage solution, ideal for warehouses, designed to store pallets holding various materials in symmetrical runs with two-tier or multi-tier pallet racking.

It’s an efficient way for warehouses to to increase storage density and is an integral part to most warehouses, commercial or retail units, manufacturing and storage facilities.

This question depends on the type of pallet you are storing. Typical UK pallet storage solutions are 1200mm x 1000mm and can be stored on a 900mm deep frame with 2 pallets on a 2700mm beam. Alternatively pallet racking can be stored on a 1100mm deep frame with 2 pallets on a 2250mm beam.

If you are looking to use pallet racking storage solutions from Europe the dimensions are: 800mm x 1200mm and are stored on a 1100mm deep frame with 3 pallets per 2700mm.

Identifying your current pallet racking system is essential, as no two racking systems are compatible. It would be beneficial for us to visit your premises or you can try looking at images to see if you can match the system.

Questions to consider would be whether or not you require heavy-duty pallet racking storage solutions or larger and high-density items. Also, you’ll want to consider whether you’re looking to scale-up or scale-down your business. This assures that the size o pallet racking you chose can support all your warehouse storage needs.

We supply FEM grade pallet racking from Europe. We are approved pallet racking inspectors, repairers & protectors by many independent inspectors/organisations and therefore can access all makes of pallet racking as long as they are not obsolete.

Pallet racking inspections access your pallet racking’s load beams, bracing & anchoring. STS Storage provide detailed risk assessments, new design layouts, and suggestions to improve your pallet racking systems safety level.

A SEMA pallet racking inspection is a detailed assessment of the condition of your storage equipment It’s performed by a SEMA Approved Racking Inspector (SARI)

The role of a SARI is to:

  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations
  • Reduce the risk of injury or failure
  • Identify any damage and recommend remedial actions
  • The inspector assesses the condition of each element of the racking

  • The inspector ranks each element as red (high risk), amber (medium risk), or green (low risk)

  • The inspector includes an assessment of the loading

  • The inspector provides a detailed report that includes recommendations for remedial action
  • A SEMA inspection ensures that your warehouse is inspected to the highest standard

  • A SEMA inspection helps to create the law in the long run

  • A SEMA inspection helps to avoid incidents and associated costs

Drive-in Racking: Is an ideal way to maximise pallet capacity within a reasonable budget, as the name suggests you physically drive into the racking and place the pallets on a series of rails storing them several deep

Double Deep Racking: Is an efficient way to achieve maximum storage capacity, it is a variant on standard adjustable pallet racking storing one pallet behind the other, its a perfect solution for storage of multiple pallet quantities of the same product. It does require a double deep forklift truck or a specialist adaption to an existing truck

Heavy-Duty Pallet Racking: We supply, install & inspect heavy-duty pallet racking for warehouse storage solutions where a pallet racking system is required to support larger, high-density goods. Our heavy-duty pallet racking is made from durable, reinforced steel, so can withstand heavy-duty loads.

Pallet Live Racking:
FIFO First In First Out: Sometimes known as pushback is where you load from the front and pick from the front, with a given amount of pallets in its depth the pallets roll forward ready for the next pick (or load)
LIFO Last In First Out: As the name suggests you load from the rear and pick from the front

Both have sets of rollers with a series of brakes , with the pushback system having a cart option (for the pallet to sit on) making it a more competitive option. Either type maximises pallet capacity and can assist product flow

Garment Racking: Is specifically designed to offer high density solutions for various clothing items on hangers with a wide variety of locations including retail stockrooms, warehouse and distribution centres.

Cantilever Racking: Is designed for the safe and organised storage of long and heavy loads – ideal for timber or metal storage. The items are usually laid on a series of arms at defined centres allowing easy picking , often with a specialist (side loader fork truck)

Vertical and Coil Racking: Vertical racking is designed to store long items such as poles or battens in an upright position with dividers to separate the different sizes and product types. Coil racking stores reels on spindles enabling excellent storage density with easy access to unreel and cut products (i.e. cables) to the required length.

Narrow Aisle Racking: Requires specialist trucks, which as the name suggests, operates in tight aisles i.e. 1.6m also referred to as VNA (very narrow aisle) with wire guidance, often the operator cab will rise with the forks/load as you pick at very high levels 10m to 15m

Pallet racking protection is an important part of pallet storage solutions. We recommend that you protect your pallet racking from the impact of fork lift trucks, general environmental damages, wear and tear etc. Column guards and barriers will help minimise damage and potential rack collapse.

As part of STS’ pallet racking installation and pallet racking inspection services, we help keep your warehouse racking safe and secure with our top-rated protectors. Made from durable materials, our protectors will ensure the stability of your racking no matter what it’s up against.

Our protectors are easy to install and will keep your racking secure for years to come, regardless of whether its heavy-duty pallet racking, drive-in racking, live pallet racking, etc.
