The Challenge

Products stored in the existing storage systems were easily accessible even in cramped low-height conditions, but lack of space meant there was no room for growth. Therefore, at the new larger and higher premises in Loughton, the challenge was to design a system that was still easily accessible but made the best use of the height and greater floor space to accommodate the business expansion which was impossible at the previous railway arch. Special storage systems for long items were suggested to improve the picking of longer and larger products.

The Solution

We recommended a 5-metre high handpicking system, with standard pallet racking for bulk storage, cantilever and vertical racking for long products and coil spindle racks for cable storage.

For the handpicking racks, we worked closely with Hiremech (a forklift specialist) who specified an order picker that had the capability of handpicking at 4500mm high.

We designed a heavy-duty picking system decked with 6 close boarded planed timber decks per level, with the flexibility of storing light to heavy-duty products on the pick levels. The installation work started at the start of July 2019 and STS Storage completed approximately 3 weeks later.
