The Challenge

To come up with a solution that would increase the number of pick locations, but not slow down their pick and pack operation. Starting in March 2016 – STS Storage produced a number of drawings, one included an extension to their mezzanine floor.

However, the most practical option was to install new high-level pick locations, with narrow aisles and guide rails with access to the highest levels (top pick level of 4500mm) using a Crown Wave (Work Assisted Vehicle) Order Picker.

The challenge was to come up with a plan to alter and remove the old unsuitable pallet racking, reconfigure remaining racks and install the new high-level shelving – all while the client continued trading.

The Solution

With the preferred solution decided upon after supplying detailed Autocad drawings at an on-site meeting presented to Warehouse Manager – Michael Vincent. We were able to show the total number of boxes that we would be able to accommodate into the new shelving system, thus determining if we could achieve the target of boxes stored for the new business requirements. The drawing detailed the build in 3 phases, which clearly showed Michael what areas we would be working in, and how long each phase would take.

Our installation work included dismantling the existing racking, which Hazchem had to ensure was emptied prior to us to removing. STS Storage also marked the floor before any work had begun so the lighting team could get ahead of schedule and light the new aisles.

Our plans were submitted to Crown to confirm that our designed complied with their aisle requirements that the Wave Truck is capable of working in.

The installation work started on 27th March 2017 and was completed approximately 3 weeks later.
