The Challenge
To increase the capacity of document storage boxes in line with the successful tender of a new contract. Having had the warehouse installed with mobile bases in preparation for future growth, STS Storage Systems were brought in to compete with the incumbent supplier to offer a more cost-effective solution and at the same time increase the box count.
STS Storage Systems invested many hours using their expertise to ensure that the final design meant Kelly’s could maximise the box count and thus the revenue. The design had many constraints owing to the complexities of the mobile base in both size and the dynamic forces created by the moving bases.
It is worth mentioning that the racking itself needed to be 11 metres high with 17 storage levels accessed by a man up picker. At the touch of a button the aisle simply opens giving the customer access to 20,000 boxes whilst moving a 300-tonne structure.
The Solution
STS Storage Systems were able to successfully increase the number of boxes stored over and the above the incumbent supplier, whilst offering a greater cost saving. The design was also of a greater and sturdier construction than the previous system employed on site.
In essence, a total of 20,000 boxes could be stored within each run of racking, each bay is capable of handling a load of 19 tonnes, making a total run weight of 300 tonnes.
Working alongside Kelly’s staff it was critical to ensure that the operation was not interrupted whilst allowing access to various areas of the secure site. STS storage systems successfully installed this project whilst working alongside Kelly’s employees to mean minimal downtime to the business operations.
How We Achieved It!
Pallet Racking
- FEM AR Pallet racking.
- Steel shelf panels across the total depth of the double run and specialist fixings to thread into steel runners
- Specialist plan bracing to stiffen and counter dynamic movement
- Cross bracing offset for minimum interruption of box locations to stiffen and counter dynamic movement
- Timber decks to bases, to allow storage on base runners and allow maintenance access
- Pick & despatch stations on end runs to the higher location
