Multi-Tier Racking:

The Challenge

Our brief was to take an empty warehouse acquired by UV&S for expansion and provide a solution that offered maximum density for 100,000+ carton locations, another 100,000 individual items and flexible workspace, all while maintaining proper environmental conditions.

The Solution

After an extended consultation process involving input from the US team, STS and the client honed-in on a multi-tier racking system tailored specifically to UV&S’s exacting requirements. Due to the scale and nature of multi-tier racking systems in the UK, a comprehensive investigation into travel distance/escape routes, smoke detection options and the floor slab capability was undertaken. The design that was finally chosen boasted 22 pick levels up to 10.5m high with a total of 4 walkway tiers.

The walkway and transfer aisles were designed with open mesh to allow maximum light penetration, climate circulation and adequate smoke detection. Additionally, we designed an enclosed staircase system to ensure safe transit off and out of the building in the event of a fire.

The lighting was a LED system on a buzz bar to offer infinite adjustment with low energy and minimal heat output.

This multi-tier racking solution while a large, complex project, we were able to work in partnership with UV&S to accommodate construction while not interrupting their business activity – a solution that served us both well over the long buildout.

It didn’t take long for UV&S to start filling up the multi-tier racking – and as a testament to the product delivered – we are already working on additional projects to accommodate their rapid growth.
