The Challenge

STS Storage was tasked to design a shelving system that would be fit for purpose and also incorporate an industrial-grade vinyl floor to cope with the high volume of traffic. All of this needed to be completed by mid-October 2019 to coincide with a partial relocation, before Lost property fully moved into Pelham Street by the end of December 2019.

STS Storage was contacted early on to work closely with the management team from the lost property office (LPO), working closely with the LPO team who already had a good idea of the shelving sizes, shelf levels and locations needed to fit all the 50,000 items into Pelham Street.

The Solution

Shelving:
STS Storage produced a number of designs including static and mobile shelving in conjunction with initial plans submitted from TFL. STS Storage converted their designs into actual shelving plans to confirm what was achievable. It was finally agreed to provide Static Shelving on the Ground, Second and Third Floors with Mobile Shelving and some static shelving on the First Floor to accommodate all the locations required.

Vinyl Floor Covering:
It was decided late on in the process to remove the majority of the carpet floor tiles and replace with new hard-wearing vinyl floor covering, which would be more practical for the trollies being used to move the items around each level and between floors, as well as the high footfall.

Fit-Out work:
On the First Floor – STS Storage added a partition wall to separate the storage area from staff mess areas
On the First and Second Floor – STS Storage created two near doorways to help the flow of traffic from West end to the East end of the two levels.
On the Second Floor – STS Storage built 3 new changing rooms for the staff as well

Benches:
New height adjustable sorting benches were supplied and fitted

How We Achieved It!

Shelving:
Meta Static Shelving – 1000mm wide x 2200mm high x 500/300mm deep
1300mm wide x 2200mm high x 800mm deep
Meta Mobile Shelving – 1000mm wide x 2200mm high x 500/300mm deep
1300mm wide x 2200mm high x 800mm deep
Meta Long Span Shelving – 1400/1800/2200mm wide x 2200mm high x 800mm deep (decked with 25mm chipboard shelves) – used on Ground

Floor only:
All Fully Pre-Galvanised Shelving System
Boltless Shelving systems, with shelves secured with shelf clips for easy adjustability
Shelves designed for 100kgs per shelf level
Long Span designed for 600kgs per shelf level
Back Cladding for all bays
Clad Frames for the extreme ends of the racks
Load Spreader Channels fitted to the underside of each frame for the first, second and third-floor static shelving

Benches:
Treston – height-adjustable 1800/2000mm wide x 900mm deep – Height adjustable from 670-1120mm. Laminated chipboard worktop.

Vinyl Flooring Covering:
Supply and install Altro Stronghold 30 flooring to the following areas, including latex floor preparation as required.
Altro is fully bonded to the subfloor using F44 adhesive, all joins to be fully welded and would occur every two metres due to the vinyl width.
274sq meters to the ground floor.
693sq meters to the first floor.
709sq meters to the second floor
188sq meters to the third floor

Fit Out Work:

First Floor:
Removal of a door and make doorway wider to assist flow across the floor
Supply and construct 1-hour fire-rated wall 8819mm long complete with door and frame, taped, jointed and painted to a finish.
Supply and fit 1-hour fire rated double door and frame into the existing wall

Second Floor:
Dismantle and remove existing wall 42 meters long and make good.
Supply and fit 1-hour fire rated double door and frame into the existing wall.

Second Floor changing rooms as follows:
Stud partition walls with insulation, tape, jointed and painted to a finish.
3 x doors and frames
Wall lining to end walls or new solid walls – tape, jointed and painted to a finish.
Paint existing internal walls to a finish.

Third Floor:
Dismantle and remove existing wall 9.8 meters long and make good.

Electrics:
Re-routing of switches and electrical cabling to allow for new door openings and removal of walls
Installation of new LED Recessed 600x600mm lights for the new Second Floor Changing Rooms.
