Sass & Belle

The Challenge

Having moved Sass and Belle to its current location in Brixton London 5 years ago (already 8 times bigger than the previous warehouse) STS Storage Systems LTD were consulted to help find a suitable warehouse and design the shell with a modern compact and efficient working environment. The key was pick efficiency in terms of time and accuracy across a broad range of SKUs. The nature of their business meant that products trend and become fast moving items for certain periods of time. The new central warehouse distribution centre warehouse design was crucial to its continued success.

The Solution

Having considered other units in and around the M25, Sass and Belle decided on a smart centrally located warehouse in Heathrow, boasting over 44,000 sq. ft. of space. Having worked on their previous warehouse projects, STS Storage Systems were consulted to offer a cost effective solution to this next venture in expanding the operation.

• A detailed site survey was conducted followed by a series of design stage meetings at our headquarters in nearby Slough, to ensure a total solution was agreed on.
• A mixture of hand item picking and bulk (pallet) locations were needed as well as a designated good’s in and out (despatch) area.
• A large 12,000 sq. ft. mezzanine floor was designed with longspan shelving above and below to accommodate the smaller fast pick items.
• Bespoke benches were created to accommodate the picking and packing department nearest the goods out exit to reduce travel distance and time.
• New pallet racking was built as well as reusing existing pallet racking in a phased build approach, offering circa 2500 pallet locations.
• A combination of Hi Bay & tubular LED lighting was used to ensure a complete turnkey solution offering low running costs in the future.

How We Achieved It!

Mezzanine Floor Mezzanine floor designed to accommodate shelving and trolleys underneath so columns did not protrude into aisles.

• 3 no staircases to ensure compliance with building control rules and avoid congestion.
• 7.2 KN m2 loading to take medium to heavy loads.
• Fully fire rated to meet fire regulations.

Longspan Shelving System

• STS longspan system, designed to fit around the mezzanine floor columns.
• 25mm Chipboard decking, each level taking 500kgs UDL.

Pallet Racking

• STS Pallet Racking system, to accommodate UK pallets, taking 1.8 tons per level

Electrics

• Low energy LED tube lighting in the mezzanine floor area.
• Low energy Hi Bay LED lighting with PIR sensors to the aisle in the bulk (pallet racking ) area.
