Warehouse Storage for OPX /SHIPBOB New Fulfilment Warehouse.

Background

Having worked successfully on their previous new warehouse and logistics facility in Swindon, OPX approached STS Storage Systems again for a new fulfilment operation on the same industrial estate as their current HQ. This time OPX was teaming up with Shipbob, a US-based organisation with a Global 3PL and fulfilment operation working within the B2B, retail and online sectors.

Having secured the right unit OPX now needed to optimise the storage in the building for this new and exciting venture.

The Challenge

OPX and ShipBob needed a mixture of bulk ‘Euro’ Pallets and hand-pick locations out of specific-sized pick bins. The operation needed to incorporate a fast pick operation whilst maximising the full height potential of the warehouse building. The target was to get over 4000 pick cartons/bins and 2500 euro pallets.

The layout would all nestle around a generous pick and pack operation to be sited in the middle of the racking near the Goods Out area, a provision for the benches, IT systems and conveyor system as this was a necessity.

The Solution

To get the requisite volume of pallets and pick bins, STS needed to be creative with the MHE. The picking operation being central to the operation meant we had to create a wide and deep area in the very middle of the racking runs nearest the shutter area (goods in/out), this would create time efficiencies and make the despatch process more seamless.

To achieve the bin/carton count STS created bays with 6 pick levels with a top pick level of 3.7m using a specialist order picker. The bulk bays housing the euro pallets were designed around a Bendi Truck adopting a narrower aisle width.

A couple of Drive-thru bays were designed at the end and middle of the runs to ensure positive flow and efficiency whilst utilising pallet storage above the tunnel.

STS completed the works in 4 weeks to coincide with the delivery of the MHE to ensure OPX were operational for the first shipment from ShipBob.
