Founded in 2004, MCP Engineering Plastics is a leading UK manufacturer and supplier of high-performance semi-finished and machined plastic components. The company holds ISO 9001:2015 accreditation and specialises in both standard and bespoke engineering plastic solutions for its clients.
In June 2024, STS Storage Systems was appointed to design and install a new pallet racking system, a mezzanine floor, and a ground-floor office within MCP’s 11,100 sq. ft warehouse in Bishop’s Stortford. The project was part of a strategic expansion to replicate and enhance the company’s existing facility in Matching Green.
MCP Engineering needed a customised pallet racking system to handle a mix of heavy hand-loaded plastic products, bulk materials and pallets of varying weights and sizes. The new warehouse was significantly taller (10–12 m high), presenting an opportunity to maximise vertical storage space while maintaining clear operational zones for fork truck movement.
In addition, STS was tasked with designing a ground-floor warehouse office beneath an existing civil mezzanine, requiring careful integration of a new 49.3 m² steel mezzanine floor above with fire-rated construction and limited headroom.
After a comprehensive survey of the building and its existing structures, STS designed a bespoke pallet racking layout to accommodate both bulk and hand-picked storage zones. This included heavy-duty Link 51 XL racking with timber decking and integrated chipboard pigeon-hole shelving for long plastic components.
The mezzanine floor was engineered for a 4.8 kN/m² loading capacity and finished with fire-rated suspended ceilings, column casings, and fascias to meet safety requirements. A single utility staircase and swing pallet gate provide safe access for materials handling via fork truck.
The ground-floor office was constructed from Troax Elan double-skin steel partitioning with integrated glazing and horizontal blinds, creating a secure and professional workspace finished in white RAL 9010 powder-coated paint.
